KING SHOCKS HISTORY
During the early 1980s, the off-road racing technology was archaic. The more advanced off-road race trucks and buggies used multi-shock setups for each wheel. Shock absorbers of the day were minimalist, off-the-shelf designs, that were often swapped out during pit stops, treated as disposable parts for longer endurance races, such as the Baja 1000.
Dissatisfied with the status quo and seeing a need to elevate suspension performance, founder Lance King begin sketching shock designs in the early 1980s for some of the top desert off-road racers of the day. His quest was to create a shocks that could endure the punishment dished out by such off-road racing legends as Walker Evans, Bill Stroppe, and Parnelli Jones.
The effort became a family affair. Lance refined his design work and machined the parts. His son Ross King served as the welder and fabricator. And his son Brett King performed the sales. The first year was rough. The trio endured its entire year without a paycheck. But the birth of an off-road industry titan survived. And the company survived to earn a cult following in the desert.
