TOYOTA RAV4
4X4 | 4WD | 2WD | Limited | Sport | LE | XLE | XSE | Adventure | TRD Off-Road
The Toyota RAV4 launched in the 1996 model year, powered by Toyota’s I4 2.0 L engine, mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, and putting economical power to the ground via a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive drivetrain.
TOYOTA RAV4 OFFROAD trims
For the offroad and overland enthusiast, popular RAV4 trims were the Toyota RAV4 Adventure and coveted Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road trim packages. Both off-road-traversing trims featured the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which boasts 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque and mated to a the Toyota’s AWF8F35 Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission. Both Toyota SUVs reached a formidable 8.6-inches of ground clearance and a stout 3,500-lb towing capacity.
- Toyota RAV4 Adventure MSRP: approximately $34,000
- Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road MSRP: approximately $37,000-$40,000, depending on the model-year package
TOYOTA RAV4 OFFROAD traction
The 5th Generation RAV4 TRD, Adventure, and Limited packages were equipped with the Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD. The advanced all-wheel-drive system improved fuel efficiency as well as traction stability by dynamically splitting power between the front and rear axles as well as independently between the left and right wheels. For fuel efficiency, this effectively reduced the workload on the engine by reverting to a 2WD until more traction is needed.
The RAV4 TRD Off Road and Adventure trim packages also featured Toyota’s Multi Terrain Select (MTS). This all-wheel-drive (AWD) traction control system automatically adjusts engine throttle, braking, and power distribution to match specific off-road conditions, whether driving on rain-slicked roads, snow, sand, mud, rock, or washboard dirt roads. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road boasts the Toyota Racing Development-tuned suspension and shock combo. The RAV4 TRD featured 18-inch matte-black wheels with Falken All-Terrain Tires. The RAV4 Adventure features 19-inch alloy wheels and lighter duty all-season tires.
TOYOTA RAV4 best-selling legacy
In 2025, Toyota’s compact crossover SUV became the best-selling SUV of all time, having sold a whopping 15 million units. Also that year, the mighty Toyota SUV surpassed the Ford F-150 as the all-time, best-selling car in the United States, a remarkable feat, considering the F-150 held the title for nearly four decades.
end of the trail
Toyota unleashed the Toyota RAV4 Adventure in the 2017 model year, after the concept’s unveiling at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road launched in the 2020 model year, tallying a total of 10 trim levels for the Toyota SUV. Both RAV4 trims were simultaneously discontinued in the 2025 model year.
